Talladega City Schools Pre-K Program

Hal Henderson is home of the Talladega City Schools Pre-K Program. Mrs. Angela Capers, a "highly qualified" teacher with exceptional talents, developed the program during the 2008-2009 academic year. Mrs. Karen Graves, a "highly qualified" paraprofessional, works collaboratively with the 2010-2011 teacher, Mrs. Patricia Cook, to continously move the program forward. Mrs. Cook was previously our State Department of Education Technical Assistant who evaluated our program. We have 18 students enrolled in Pre-K. I am also pleased to announce that our site has been recognized by the State Department of Education as "exemplary."

"WRITING TO ROCK" IS COMING SOON!

On February 1, 2008, Hal Henderson faculty, staff, and students will meet in the hallway and dance to the CHA-CHA-SLIDE. All students K-6 will "write with purpose" for 45 minutes. Afterwards, they will all be rewarded with a "Rockin" good time.

"YOU CANNOT EFFECTIVELY TREAT ANY MISBEHAVIOR UNTIL YOU KNOW THE REASON FOR IT."
Something to think about....

1. Would you agree that the misbehavior of students is one of the most destructive factors in your professional life?

2. Think of techniques that can be used to determine students' motivation for unacceptable behavior.

3. What stance should educators take when students seem to get satisfaction from being unlikable?

4. Share ways you can work together to solve problems associated with student behavior.

5. What can be done to help students grasp and accept the concept that with power comes responsibility?

"Write To Rock"

Henderson's Colorful Creations

Students at Hal Henderson recently participated in a school-wide writing project. Students Kindergarten through Third grade made a class book. Grades four through six made their own individual books. As you can see from the pictures below, they all did a fantastic job creating the books. Students wrote about what they have learned in class or dreams they have for their family.

The Kindergarten students had very interesting things to say in their books...

Quintravious is proud of his book!

Stevon showing off his amazing art work.
2nd Grade students dedicated their book to Mrs.Sims, Hal Henderson's Reading Coach.

These books will be a treasure for years to come. We are very proud of the colorful creations. We have such bright & creative students at Hal and are very proud of each and every one of them.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK!

"THE MEASURE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE IS SATISFACTION."

Something to think about....
1. When you think about customer service, what characteristics distinguish your classroom from others?
2. What strategies are used in your classroom to ensure that you provide good customer service?
3. What listening techniques do you employ with students?
4. What is the difference between nurturing a conversation and being patronizing.
5. Would your students and their parents say they are certain that you listen to them? Why or why not?

Did you know?
According to research on students who drop out, any number of factors could be the source behind a student walking out the door. For instance, he or she repeated 2nd grade. Some studies suggest that being retained even once between 1st and 8th grades makes a student four times more likely to drop out than a classmate who was never held back.

All of this is said to encourage you to treat all students as customers. We always want all of our customers to be 100% satisfied. All children can learn and it is our responsibility to teach them. If there are factors standing in the way, it is also our job to take necessary steps to remove those factors.

As stated earlier today, please do not allow students to bring electronic games, MP3 players, etc. to class. THIS IS AGAINST BOARD POLICY. Students are not allowed to bring any item that may be a distraction. Do not allow these items to be brought as a reward, as a one time event, for a field trip, etc. This is not allowed AT ANY TIME!!!! If you are giving students permission, you are working against our board policy.

2007 MEMORIES

It has been a great year at Hal Henderson Elementary. We would like to leave you with a few of our favorite memories of 2007.

Thanks to Mrs. Laros for making arrangements for our students to attend the homecoming pep rally at THS.
It was a sad day at Henderson when Ms. Duncan retired. We all love Ms. Duncan & surprised her with a going away party & a plaque at the end of the year.

Although we lost a great friend/teacher in Ms. Duncan, Mrs.Laros did an excellent job finding a replacement for her. Hal Henderson welcomes Ms. Carrie Uptain.

Carrie is an asset to Hal Henderson.

Each year, the students love meeting "Smokey The Bear". He teaches them an important message on how to prevent forrest fires and fire safety.

We love our great leader, Mrs.Laros, and we show our appreciation on her birthday, bosses day and any other day that we can....

Ms.Gaskin made Mrs.Laros this beautiful Birthday Cake.

Mrs. Laros makes faculty meetings interesting...

Ms. Gaskin shows that teaching can be fun...

Teachers at Hal love implementing Technology into their daily instruction.

We hope everyone has a great year in 2008. Mr. Smith & Ms. Williams' students put together a beautiful bulletin board for the new year. They asked their students to write their New Year's Resolutions for 2008 & this was displayed on the bulletin board.
