Talladega City Schools Pre-K Program

Hal Henderson is home of the Talladega City Schools Pre-K Program. Mrs. Angela Capers, a "highly qualified" teacher with exceptional talents, developed the program during the 2008-2009 academic year. Mrs. Karen Graves, a "highly qualified" paraprofessional, works collaboratively with the 2010-2011 teacher, Mrs. Patricia Cook, to continously move the program forward. Mrs. Cook was previously our State Department of Education Technical Assistant who evaluated our program. We have 18 students enrolled in Pre-K. I am also pleased to announce that our site has been recognized by the State Department of Education as "exemplary."

Friday is "Show & Tell" Day in Pre-K.....

Pre-K students enjoy bringing one of their favorite toys, books, etc. from home to share with their friends. You never know what 4 years olds will tell you...

Lauren brought her cell phone because she LOVES talking to her Grandma on the phone...

Aniyah shares the belt that her mother spanks her with when she doesn't get a "star!"

Jaden brought 2 of his favorite toys, Duncan & James from "Thomas the Tank Engine."

Brennon brought the dinosaur that he & his dad play with...

Brady says, "Sometimes I like to sleep with Max and Ruby!"

Langdon is ready to build train tracks.....

Madalyn loves to read her "Johnny Appleseed" book.

Ahmaria is proud of the apple tree that she made in class.

Alivia loves to jump on the trampoline with her cat....

Garrett brought a "golf ball" to share because he loves playing golf with his Dad...

"Show and Tell" gives students an opportunity to share their favorite toys, but more importantly, our little ones are improving language and communication skills. We are proud of our babies. They are showing tremendous growth and continue to amaze us!

Hal's Gifted Class executes "The Egg Drop Experiment"

Gifted Class executes "The Egg Drop Experiment"

Gifted students at Henderson finished their recent unit by carrying out their egg drop experiments. Students drew out a plan of how they would construct a container to protect a raw egg when dropped from a high place. When the three eggs were dropped from the "snail" on the school's playground, Jake's, unfortunately, didn't survive. The other two remaining eggs were taken by Ms. Kearley to the football stadium across town and dropped off the back of the stands at the football stadium. Now that's a high place! (The video above shows Nijah and Malachi's eggs being dropped from the back of the stadium.) Of the remaining two eggs, Nijah's didn't make it. Congratulations to Malachi for constructing the only surviving egg container! Good job to all my guys!

The Mobile Dairy Classroom Program

Teaching kids about the dairy industry is one of the priorities of the Mobile Dairy Classroom Program. The Mobile Dairy Classroom is a traveling milking parlor, featuring a live cow (Daisy) and an oral presentation. Ms. Griffith, trained instructor, demonstrated how to milk a cow, described how milk goes from the farm to the consumer, and then answered questions from the audience. This innovative program brought the dairy experience directly to our children. Our children and teachers were able to share an experience that included math, science, health (nutrition), and agriculture in an outdoor classroom setting. Students learned the characteristics and anatomy of dairy cows, the importance of dairy foods for good health, the modern milking process, and modern environmental and food safety practices.

Ten "Awesome" facts that all students learned about cows, dairy products, nutrition, and more during the presentation:

(1)In America, Hoisteins and Jersey cows are the two types of milk cows that are used "most" of the time for milk. Hoisteins are the black and white cows and are used because they give a lot of milk. Jerseys are the brown cows that give less milk but more cream.
(2)Most cows have short hair and come in a variety of colors.
(3)Cows have big toenails called hooves and long tails that they can use to swat pesky flies.
(4)Cows have very large eyes and a long tongue.
(5)Cows do not sweat!
(6)Cows drink about a bathtub full of water everyday.
(7)Cows are mammals.
(8)Cows eat about 90 pounds of nutritious food a day which is equal to about 210 baked potatoes.
(9)One cow will produce about 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime.
(10)As children grow, they need calcium for continued growth and development of bones and teeth. Calcium also helps muscles like the heart function properly, and keeps the blood from clotting.

Hal Henderson's "August" Good Citizens.....

Each month, teachers recognize students for being "Good Citizens." Students are selected for voluntarily cleaning an area in the classroom, for being friendly to a new student, for showing good sportsmanship in PE, for reporting important information, for helping a younger student, for showing self control, and for simply being GOOD. We are proud of our students and want to recognize those who stand out.

Each morning, Mrs. Laros reminds students that someone is always watching and listening! Watch out, you may be selected in September. Always be on your best behavior and make good choices. Your teacher, counselor, and principal are proud of you! Continue to be the BEST YOU CAN BE!

Ms. Deese provides a special treat to those students who made an impression on their teacher. This month, the following were recognized as "August" Good Citizens:

Arianna - Kindergarten
