Talladega City Schools Pre-K Program

Hal Henderson is home of the Talladega City Schools Pre-K Program. Mrs. Angela Capers, a "highly qualified" teacher with exceptional talents, developed the program during the 2008-2009 academic year. Mrs. Karen Graves, a "highly qualified" paraprofessional, works collaboratively with the 2010-2011 teacher, Mrs. Patricia Cook, to continously move the program forward. Mrs. Cook was previously our State Department of Education Technical Assistant who evaluated our program. We have 18 students enrolled in Pre-K. I am also pleased to announce that our site has been recognized by the State Department of Education as "exemplary."

"THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK"

"High performance classrooms are not dominated by competition, but by collaboration, competence, and cooperation."

Something to think about!

1. "Competition and learning have an uneasy relationship."

2. How pervasive is cheating in your classroom? Do you see evidence that competition is a part of this problem?

3. What actions do you take to motivate students to support each other?

4. Identify some of the opportunities you provide students to practice working collaboratively with others.

5. How do you maintain a healthy balance between collaboration and competition?

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT WE HAVE ONLY 18 INSTRUCTIONAL DAYS BEFORE ARMT TESTS. PLEASE USE CALCULATORS, GRIDDED SHEETS, AND OPEN-ENDED BOXES AS PRACTICE WITHIN YOUR MATH CLASSROOMS. INSTRUCTIONAL TIME IS VALUABLE - WE CAN AND WILL BE NEAR THE TOP!!!!

"THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK"

"Expand your input and the outcome will be better."

Something to think about!!!

1. In what ways do you see the Law of Filtered Information at work in your classroom? What insights have you gained from your understanding of this law?

2. To what degree do you feel that you can rely on students for valuable and necessary information?

3. What types of problems may occur if a teacher relies too heavily on a few "select" people for information?

4. Think about procedures that can be used to check and recheck the information you receive.

Stanford-10 and ARMT tests are quickly approaching. We have only six weeks left to remediate, enrich, and/or teach our children the necessary skills to score well on these tests. I am safe in saying that NO CHILD knows all he/she needs to know. Remember, students can't possibly do well if skills haven't been taught or introduced. All of us have very important jobs - educating children. Please use your time wisely!!! Do not allow your students to leave your classroom to run errands, pick up trash or any other task. Our students need to be actively engaged from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Remember, we are below 50 percentile in all areas. This is below national average. Our school goal is to raise our scores to 50 percentile or better. WE CAN DO THIS!!!! Please work all day everyday - every minute counts! For most of our children, you solely will determine whether these children score well or not so well. IT'S UP TO YOU!!!!!

"THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK"

The Talladega County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. donated six wonderful books to our library to enhance our knowledge of Black History. This is the first annual donation from the chapter and they plan to make this an annual event. We appreciate the thoughtfulness and hope they will return to read with our children. They were very sweet ladies.
Also Senator Jim Pruitt donated $1,000.00 to our library and $700.00 to our general fund. If you see Senator Pruitt please thank him for his generous gift as well.

"The more power one has, the more responsibility one has as well."

As you approach eay day, think of the following questions. Our students need your guidance and you CAN and DO make a difference in the lives of each child.

1. What specific powers can you give students to help them learn to be more responsible?

2. Identify rules that were created to help young people be more responsible. Suggest an alternative course of action.

3. How might your view concerning power change if viewed through students' perspective?

As recommended by Voyager and ARI, I will be asking each of you to participate in walkthroughs. I believe this is a wonderful suggestion and will give insight to all. Please think of a day (morning or afternoon) that would be good for you. Please e-mail this date and time to me. You will only be out of your classroom one-half a day. I will share the substitute between two teachers. I will put together a schedule once all of you e-mail me with a date and time. I will forward the information to you!!
