Hal Henderson Elementary is a "TIGGERIFIC SCHOOL!" Student learning is enhanced daily through the use of advanced technology. All of our teachers are "highly qualified!"
Talladega City Schools Pre-K Program
Hal Henderson is home of the Talladega City Schools Pre-K Program. Mrs. Angela Capers, a "highly qualified" teacher with exceptional talents, developed the program during the 2008-2009 academic year. Mrs. Karen Graves, a "highly qualified" paraprofessional, works collaboratively with the 2010-2011 teacher, Mrs. Patricia Cook, to continously move the program forward. Mrs. Cook was previously our State Department of Education Technical Assistant who evaluated our program. We have 18 students enrolled in Pre-K. I am also pleased to announce that our site has been recognized by the State Department of Education as "exemplary."

ONLY 27 INSTRUCTIONAL DAYS LEFT!

This is just a reminder that there are only 27 instructional days left before Spring testing. All of you know where we need to be and how to get there; therefore, I know you will continue to work diligently to prepare our students and present the necessary material in order for our boys/girls to perform well.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK!
"WE MUST BE ABLE TO DISTINGUISH STUDENT SKILLS THAT ARE NICE TO KNOW FROM THOSE THAT ARE NECESSARY TO KNOW."
Something to think about...
1. What do you take into consideration when determining your implemented curriculum?
2. What strategies can be used to overcome the reality that students do not reach proficiency on academic material at the same time?
3. Identify specific ways collaboration among colleagues proves beneficial in regard to Power Standards?

Writing Assessment is coming up on Thursday, February 21, 2008. On the "Writing to Rock" and "Mock Assessment" days, students wrote well and I know our 5th graders will shine on test day. Please remind students to get plenty of rest the night before. All 4th-6th grade students will write on this day. 4th and 6th grade teachers - make sure you have prompts prepared for this day. The test will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. Students will write for 50 minutes. We should complete the test around 9:30. During the testing period, the 4th-6th grade hall will be off limits.

The District Accreditation Team will be in our building on Tuesday, February 26th. Several of you will be meeting/interviewing with this committee. The Self Study is available on teach talladega for your convenience. Also, on this day K-3 will enjoy a guest - Cat in the Hat. Program will begin at 1:00 p.m. Additional details will follow.
Student report cards will be placed in your box on Monday, February 18 for your review. Please correct any errors and forward the report card back to Mrs. Davis for a new report card. Please make sure you comment on each card. A positive comment, an encouraging comment, or a need to improve comment is necessary.

"ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER?"

Mrs. Laros adds creativity, motivation, and a new experience to Friday mornings at Hal Henderson. She encourages students to watch the TV SHOW "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?" On Friday morning after reading the Character Ed message, Mrs. Laros will challenge students with 5 questions from the Thursday night show. Through this experience, we hope students are encouraged to watch the show. Watching the show can be a fun, valuable learning experience!

All grades (teachers and students) seem to enjoy the Friday challenge.
Samira is in deep thought attempting to get all answers correct!Students love the challenge knowing if they get ALL 5 questions correct, they are allowed to choose a prize from Mrs. Laros' treasure box.

Mrs. Laros checking student answers.

Students waiting patiently to see if they got their answers correct.

Choosing a prize from the treasure box is a difficulty decision for some students.

Congratulations to all of our students who participated in this years local Science Fair. Everyone worked very hard on their projects! Three of our students came in second place in the group competition for their project titled "Ocean Floor." As you can see from the smile on their faces, they were very happy to represent Hal Henderson.
A very special person is kind enough to work with our students on a daily basis, and we truly appreciate Ms. Mann's mother, Ms. Liz, for her dedication in volunteering at our school. Ms. Liz has been volunteering for years and she is greatly appreciated. All students love "Ms. Liz"!
