Talladega City Schools Pre-K Program

Hal Henderson is home of the Talladega City Schools Pre-K Program. Mrs. Angela Capers, a "highly qualified" teacher with exceptional talents, developed the program during the 2008-2009 academic year. Mrs. Karen Graves, a "highly qualified" paraprofessional, works collaboratively with the 2010-2011 teacher, Mrs. Patricia Cook, to continously move the program forward. Mrs. Cook was previously our State Department of Education Technical Assistant who evaluated our program. We have 18 students enrolled in Pre-K. I am also pleased to announce that our site has been recognized by the State Department of Education as "exemplary."

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK!

"AN UNCORRECTED MISTAKE IS A LOST OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN."

Something to think about....

1. What approaches do you use with students who refuse to admit they have made a mistake?
2. What guidance must teachers provide students to keep students' confidence from being damaged because of the students' mistakes?
3. How can you be enthusiastic about the learning potential in a mistake without making the mistake seem unimportant?

Congratulations Mr. Smith, Ms. Williams, Mrs. Clay, and Mr. Berry - I have observed all of you using technology in your classrooms on a daily basis. Through the use of notepad, I have seen DOL activities, "use it don't lose it" drills in math, vocabulary and fluency in reading, and other creative ideas. You truly are making a difference in the lives of our students and they really seem to enjoy your classes. Keep up the good work!!! We will all see results in the Spring. YEA!!!!!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

"WHEN WE REACT PERSONALLY RATHER THAN PROFESSIONALLY TO A PROBLEM, WE CAN BECOME PART OF THE PROBLEM."

Something to think about....

1. To be an effective disciplinarian, the teacher must become the primary adjustor.
2. Think of additional discipline techniques you can use besides being pleasant, being unpleasant, and resorting to help from the office.
3. Think about the likely outcome if teachers respond personally instead of professionally when handling a discipline situation.
4. How does the presence of the rest of the class affect the way you approach a misbehaving student? Remember, treat children as you would like your child to be treated.

Henderson Welcomes THS Tigers & Cheerleaders

Students at Hal Henderson had their own pep rally Friday. Several of the THS Tiger Football Players and the Varsity Cheerleaders had the students fired up! Tae Keith spoke to the students about listening to their teachers, doing their homework, and getting an education. Tae represented his classmates and team well. Henderson students were cheering "Go Tigers Go!" as the players and cheerleaders loaded the bus to leave.

The students at Henderson had a lot of spirit and joined the cheerleaders in cheering and dancing to "ice cream and cake".

The students were very excited to see the THS mascot. Some of our little ones were scared and a bit apprehensive, but they all enjoyed the visit from the Tiger. Everyone wanted to take a picture with the tiger.

The students enjoyed meeting the THS Football players. They thought they were "cool" and some of our guys want to play football and grow up to be "just like the guys" that were here on Friday.

Thank you Ms. Peters, Football players, and cheerleaders for allowing Hal Henderson to be a part of your pep rally.

Please come back to visit soon!

3 YEARS IN A ROW!

Thanks to all: Principal, Teachers, Instructional Assistants, Custodians, Secretary, Lunchroom Staff & especially.....STUDENTS of Hal Henderson Elementary for our success in making AYP 3 years in a row.

We are proud of our continuous progress and success. We are always looking for a reason to celebrate (eat) and making AYP gave us the opportunity to do just that! Everyone joined in the celebration by making their own favorite dish, or in some cases "buying" their own dish. Hal Henderson had a feast. Special thanks to Ms. Gaskin, Kindergarten teacher, for the seasonal table decorations.

After the adult celebration, our students who made gains on the Stanford-10, ARMT, and ADAW were honored with an outside BBQ. Mr. Wilson, Custodian, did a great job grilling the hot dogs. Students enjoyed hot dogs, chips, 100% juice, and fruit popsicles. All students had a great time at the BBQ.

One sixth grade student was celebrating her birthday. From the looks of the money attached to her shirt, I believe she had a good birthday.

We are very proud of all of our students at Henderson and want them to know it!
Thank you students for your participation in Henderson making AYP!

Thank You Parigi's!

October's Supper Club was awesome! Parigi's Pizza in Talladega sponsored this monthly event. The service, food, and fellowship was excellent.
Supper club was well attended this month by faculty, staff, and parents. Although we filled the entire bottom floor of the restaurant, we were proud to move in additional tables and chairs from upstairs. A large crowd gives all of us the opportunity to communicate, discuss and make plans for our "little ones!"We also surprised and rewarded one Kindergarten student, Jahquan Cunningham, with a limousine ride. Jahquan was our top cookie dough seller! He sold over 50 tubs of cookie dough raising over $700.00. As you can see in the the picture, he was excited and shy, but enjoyed the ride.Mrs. Wilson, a Henderson parent, received a limo ride back to her car. She was thrilled!/> />

As you can see from the smiling faces, the faculty/staff, parents & students all enjoyed this great night at Parigi's.<

We have two sets of very special "twins" at Henderson. Ja'querius & Jaquan Swain and Morgan & Megan Garrett. They are all precious and enjoy school and other events.

Jy'Lyricc Miller, a sixth grade student, was celebrating her birthday. We surprised her with a birthday song and Parigi's was kind enough to give her a piece of cake. This will be a special memory for Jy'Lyricc.
We are all looking forward to our next supper club.
Thanks again, Parigi's Pizza, Beth Paris, and staff!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
"Students are the reason for our professional existence."

Something to think about....

1. Identify techniques that can be used to encourage students to take learning risks to increase their performance.

2. Discuss approaches that work with parents when trying to gain their assistance in getting students to live up to their potential.

3. Share techniques that can be used to convince students of their gifts and talents.

4. Share examples in faculty, data, and GLAD meetings of strategies that can be used to customize teaching to meet students' learning needs.

5. How receptive and flexible are you when spontaneous learning opportunities occur in your classroom? What governs your response?
